Student Health Home

• Morning medications are to be given at home prior to the student’s arrival to school.
• Only medications absolutely necessary for the student to remain at school will be given during the school day.
• All medical documentation will need to be submitted to the clinic annually. Medical documentation is only good for one school year. 
• In order for your student to receive Tylenol, ibuprofen, or Tums from the clinic, a parent/guardian must fill out the student's SchoolCare enrollment and give that permission.  Without that permission documentation, these will NOT be administered to the student in the clinic.  (SchoolCare enrollment must be completed annually and will be emailed in mid-July.  Students who enroll after the start of a school year should receive their SchoolCare enrollment via email within 48 hours after school enrollment is complete.) 
• Controlled medication must be transported to/from the clinic by a parent/guardian.
• Students must be fever, vomiting, and diarrhea free for 24 hours without medication in order to attend school. 
• Students being sent home with fever, vomiting, and diarrhea must be picked up from school.
• Students must go to the clinic if they are feeling ill. Students are not allowed to call their parents to be sent home. Only students sent home by the school nurse will not be counted against their attendance. 

SchoolCare is the online service that maintains medical information for BCSC students. The system enables student immunization information, physical exam results, and nurse visits to be stored securely and compliant with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations. Every summer, families review the health information and re-submit with any necessary changes.

In mid-July, all returning families will receive an email from SchoolCare with a link to complete the health registration for the next school year. Please check your spam folder. The subject line will say “Complete health registration for (Student Name)” and come from the email address noreply@schoolcare.com. Complete the information about your student’s conditions, medications, allergies, and more.  This information is sent directly to the school nurse. When you receive the message, please complete this as soon as possible. Please contact SchoolCare with questions at support@schoolcare.com.

At the beginning of a new school year (including PK and Kindergarten), new families will first receive an email from activation@schoolcare.com to activate your student’s account. Then you will receive an email from noreply@schoolcare.com to complete your student’s health registration.

The State of Indiana Department of Health issues immunization requirements for students attending public schools in Indiana. Documentation of these vaccinations must be on file at school. Under Indiana Code 20-34-4 state law requires Brownsburg Community School Corporation to exclude non–compliant students from school without proper immunization or documentation.

If your students' immunizations/vaccinations are not up to date, please make an appointment for them to receive the appropriate immunizations/vaccinations. They can be administered by your students’ providers' office, the Hendricks County Health Department (317-745-9222), and most pharmacies.

FIRST - Please make sure your student's SchoolCare enrollment is complete and all permissions related to medication have been completed in SchoolCare.

Medications/clinic provided medication 
Students are not allowed to have prescription medication or over-the-counter medication with them.  The clinic only carries Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, and Tums. Students SchoolCare enrollment must be completed with the appropriate permissions given for the clinic to administer and treat your student. The clinic does not carry any cold/allergy medication or cough drops.

Over-the-Counter Medication
If you want to keep over-the-counter medication in the clinic for your student, a Permission for Over-the-Counter Medication form will need to be filled out by a parent/guardian and signed. The medication must be current (not expired), in its original container, and unopened (seals cannot be broken).  The clinic can only administer the medication as directed by the manufacturer per weight and/or age. If an over-the-counter medication needs to be given outside of the manufacturer's instructions, then a note from the student’s provider must be sent/faxed to the clinic including the student's name, dosing, route, frequency, and the name of the medication. Medication that is not FDA-approved will not be administered at school with the exception of cough drops and lactase enzyme (e.g. Lactaid).

Prescription Medication
If your student will take prescription medication or has a PRN (as-needed medication) that will need to be kept in the clinic, please fill out the Hold Harmless form. The form must be signed by a parent/guardian.  Please also check the appropriate box and sign the Hold Harmless form for transportation of the medication at the end of the school year. The medication will need to be current, in its original container, with the prescription label attached. If your student has a medication that is a controlled substance, the parent/guardian must drop off the medication initially, bring in any refills, and pick up the remainder of the prescription at the end of the school year.   

If your student has a severe allergy, asthma, diabetes, or seizures and requires an epi-pen, inhaler, glucagon, or seizure management in the clinic, please have your student’s provider fill out the appropriate action plan for each condition. If your student has an epi-pen, inhaler, glucagon, or emergency seizure medication that will be kept in the clinic, a Hold Harmless form will need to be filled out and signed by a parent/guardian. All medication needs to have the prescription label attached to the bottle, inhaler, or box.  If your student will need to self-carry their emergency medication, please contact your school nurse for the appropriate required form. If the clinic will need to share or communicate information with your student's provider, please sign the Consent for Mutual Exchange form. 

If your student has a food allergy and needs substitutions, please fill out the Nutritional Substitution form which requires a physician’s signature and return to the school nurse.  

Other Health Concerns/Medical Conditions

If your student has a medical condition that will need to be managed at school, please have their provider supply orders and documentation to the clinic. If the clinic will need to share or communicate information with your student's provider, please sign the Consent for Mutual Exchange form. 

Brownsburg students in grades 1, 3, 5, 8, and those suspected of having trouble seeing will be participating in a vision screening each school year. 1st graders may also be participating in a more comprehensive eye exam using Modified Clinical Technique (MCT) testing which is conducted by a licensed eye professional. Vision screenings are a state requirement.

If families do NOT want their student to participate in the vision screening, they should contact the school nurse as soon as possible. Reminders will be sent in school and district communications at the beginning of a school year.  

School Smiles, a school dental program, will be visiting our elementary schools twice throughout the 2026-27 school year (6 months between visits).  If your student does not routinely visit a dentist (no dental visit in the last 6 months) and they are insured or uninsured they are welcome to see the school dentist during these visits. They accept Medicaid, private insurance, offer self-pay rates and grants through their foundation.  Signing your student up will give permission for both visits. All scheduled medications sent on field trips must be in their original prescription container with a pharmacy label. Medications may not be repackaged into envelopes or baggies of any kind. Only the required quantity of scheduled medications to be administered while on the field trip will be sent with the student’s teacher or corporation staff member in the original prescription medication container.

Emergency medications such as asthma inhalers, seizure medications, anaphylaxis medications and diabetic medications must be sent in their original prescription containers with a pharmacy label.
