In accordance with Indiana Code 20-35.5, Brownsburg Community Schools administers a comprehensive dyslexia screening to all students in grades K-2. The assessment tools we utilize include:
- Decoding-Encoding Screener for Dyslexia (DESD)
- Arkansas Rapid Naming Screener (AR-RAN)
- And various elements of the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (Dibels) framework.
In 2021-2022 we identified 75 students as “At Risk or “At Some Risk”. All 75 received “interventions for learning characteristics related to dyslexia” as reported on the annual IDOE Elementary Reading plans. Building based RtI teams discussed all 75 and referrals were made to our School Psychologists for additional dyslexia screenings as warranted by those reviews.
In 2022-2023 we identified 107 students as “At Risk or “At Some Risk”. (Of the 107, 63 had a preexisting Special Education or ENL identification, and 44 had no prior identification. Building based RtI teams discussed all 107 and referrals were made to our School Psychologists for additional dyslexia screenings as warranted by those reviews. Of those 44, 43 received “interventions for learning characteristics related to dyslexia” as reported on the annual IDOE Elementary Reading plans. In all, 6 students were formally identified with dyslexia.
