The Office of Special Education is committed to supporting students with disabilities.

This support involves:

  • collaborating with parents, staff, and students
  • providing professional development to ensure staff are properly trained to address the diverse needs of students
  • providing ongoing guidance to assist building leaders and staff in creating plans and programs that allow each student to make progress in the curriculum

The Office of Special Education coordinates assessment to determine eligibility for special education, as well as the provision of special education and related services.

BCSC utilizes various differentiated instructional strategies and interventions to assist students within general education.  However, when these interventions are determined to be ineffective in addressing a particular student’s learning problem, a referral for an educational evaluation may be made. Usually, this referral will start at the building level by the student’s teacher(s) or an administrative representative; however, parents may request a referral. An instructional team may work to suggest interventions, new teaching strategies, or other appropriate ideas. An educational evaluation may also be requested.  After an evaluation, the student’s parents are invited to a case conference meeting to review the information collected and determine what services may be appropriate.
