Who may attend Harris Academy

Students must be enrolled at either Avon High School or Brownsburg High School

These are the minimum* enrollment requirements:

1. Students should have earned a minimum of one-half of the required credits toward earning a  diploma prior to applying for entrance to Harris Academy.

2. Students should have passed a minimum of one of the two Graduation Qualifying Exams (GQE) - English/Language Arts and/or Mathematics.

* Other students may be accepted with the approval of the director and/or by the assignment of the Director for Secondary Education for Avon or the Associate Superintendent for Brownsburg.

Students wanting to enroll must be dedicated to earning their high school diploma, not enrolled in any other school or adult basic education program, and live in one of the two school districts.

What types of students come to Harris Academy?

Students attend Harris Academy for various reasons. Harris Academy began servings students during the 2006-07 school year. The program serves students with a variety of unique needs. Below is a list of some of the more common reasons students choose Harris Academy.


• To accelerate the recovery of credits
• To help with social or emotional issues
• To attend school in a small learning community
• Child care needs
• They need to work while still attending school
• They need scheduling flexibility for other reasons
• The student needs individual assistance in one or more subjects
• There are other unique circumstances

Is transportation provided to and from school?

Students attending Harris Academy must arrange their own transportation to and from school. Bus service is not provided by Brownsburg or Avon school corporations.

How long do students have to attend school each day?

Most students at Harris Academy attend school all day. Classes meet from 9:05 AM to 4:35 PM. Most students will leave campus during Block 3 (12:07 PM - 1:33 PM).

Does it cost money to attend Harris Academy?

The only fees charged are the same type of fees charged by their home high school. Parents must pay text book rental fees and student activity fees.

Do students who graduate from Harris Academy earn a high school diploma?

Yes. Students who graduate through Harris Academy earn the same diploma from their home high school as if they had never left. Students are encouraged to participate in the commencement exercises with their classmates at their home high school.

Attention Avon High School Students

The Avon Community School Corporation requires 11 trimesters of attendance to receive an Avon High Schooll Diploma (ACSC Board Policy 5464). Any student planning on completing graduation requirements the first or second quarter of their senior year at Harris Academy must request a waiver (in writing) of this requirement from the ACSC School Board. All waiver requests must be delivered to the Avon High School principal at least 30 days before the expected completion of graduation requirements. Waivers are granted on an individual basis depending on circumstances that require a student to end their high school career early. Students that are approved for an early graduation waiver will not be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies at Avon High School in May/June.

Can students attend college after graduation?

Yes, many AHS and BHS graduates who attended Harris Academy are enrolled in colleges and career technicial schools. Also, many former Harris Academy students have enlisted in the U.S. Military.

Do Harris Academy students earn Core 40 diplomas?

Yes, students from Brownsburg High School must complete the requirements for a Core 40 diploma. Students from Avon High School are encouraged to earn a Core 40 diploma, but may decide to earn a General Education diploma. (Avon class of 2010 must comlete the requirements for a Core 40 diploma.) In either case, the student must meet the same graduation requirements as their peers at their home high school.

Do students have to pass the ISTEP+ Graduation Qualifying Examination?

Yes, Harris Academy students must complete the same requirements of other students enrolled in their home school. This includes passing the GQE or qualifying for a waiver.
